Phase 2 Housing Launch, 02nd September 2022

Our Phase 2 Housing project was met with many obstacles. However despite this, the launch which took place on our 25th anniversary was a resounding success. The media (Cape Argus), various dignitaries such as Councillor Franchesca Walker, several church leaders, Department of Social Development representatives and Alderman Clive Justus were among those in attendance. The celebration program delivered heart-warming performances of song and spiritual dance by residents. Alderman Clive Justus officiated the ribbon cutting ceremony. The new quarters were named after chairman Louis de Jager and founder Loretta Napier.

Omamuyovwi ‘Dante’ Gbejewoh with Shafeek and Liza Ortell.

Omamuyovwi ‘Dante’ Gbejewoh is a resident at Elim. The 29 year old Nigerian left his home three years ago after several failed attempts at securing funding to further his education in the Environmental Studies field. He completed his undergraduate degree in Nigeria and subsequently decided to apply to South African universities. Dante went on to complete his masters degree at the Stellenbosch University. During this time, he performed odd jobs to create a stream of income while living in the shelter. His dream is to develop research that will positively impact the battle against climate change and the reduction in the lack of consistent access to food for everyone.
